Modern Sage.

The mission of Modern Sage is to empower people 55 and over to consciously step into and embody the experience of living as an elder in today’s society. Rather than seeing aging as a period of decline, we explore it as a stage of life rich with perspective, honesty, and depth. Together we reflect on what it means to live with greater awareness, to hold the complexity of loss and change, and to recognize the quiet authority that comes from having lived through many seasons of life.

A central practice of Modern Sage is expressive journaling—a simple but powerful way to explore thoughts and feelings that often remain unspoken. Through guided writing prompts and reflective exercises, participants learn how writing can help process grief, name difficult emotions, and clarify what matters most in this stage of life. Expressive journaling allows us to speak honestly to ourselves on the page, creating space for insight, relief, and self-understanding.

Equally important is the practice of sharing within a supportive community circle. When people gather in a respectful and attentive space, stories that might otherwise remain hidden can be heard and honored. Listening to one another with compassion creates a sense of belonging and reminds us that we are not alone in our experiences of aging, loss, and change. In this way, the circle becomes a place where wisdom is exchanged, connection deepens, and community is strengthened.

  • Expressive Journaling Groups

As Dr. Gabor Maté says, “It’s not what’s wrong with you, it’s what happened to you.”

Journaling for emotional expression, especially grief, is a powerful tool to reveal part of ourselves we may have not been seeing. Expressive journaling is not to be kept but to vent as a practice to reduce the reservoir of feelings from childhood, from current stressors, and even as a byproduct of our personalities.

These take place on location in Ojai, California and are offered for all adults.

Dates, location, and cost to be announced.
