After seeing a need for more adventure, empowerment and presence for a certain age group, we decided to lead surf retreats for older women and offer expressive journaling circles for people over the age of 55. 

Thus, Modern Sage was born.  A sage is a grounded, wise guide, typically an elder, who leads through wisdom, authenticity, and experience.

Surfing is a living metaphor for flow, resilience, and surrender.  

Expressive journaling circles offer reflection, powerful emotional release, and shared experience.

Surfing and journaling, though seemingly different, share a deep commonality in the way they invite presence and self-expression. Both require being fully in the moment — a surfer attuned to the rhythm of the waves, and a writer attuned to the rhythm of their thoughts. 

Each offers a form of release: surfing channels energy and emotion through movement, while journaling transforms them into words. They both nurture connection — surfing with the vastness of nature, journaling with the depth of the self — and each rewards patience and practice. In their own ways, they are powerful acts of balance, reflection, and flow.

  • Wisdom Sage Community Circles in Ojai

    These circles are for anyone (men and women) 55 and above. We will have ten-week groups where we sit in community, share in circles, and build connection and support with one another. We address topics such as community, grief, and how to be an Elder in today’s society.

  • Expressive Journaling Groups

    As Dr. Gabor Maté says, “It’s not what’s wrong with you, it’s what happened to you.”

    Journaling for expression, creativity and even grief is a powerful tool to reveal part of ourselves we have not been seeing. Expressive journaling is not to be kept but to vent as a practice to reduce the reservoir of feelings from childhood, from current stressors, and even as a byproduct of our personalities.

    These take place on location in Ojai, California and are offered for all adults.
